Korian Family: using digital technology to support social and family connections

Maintaining regular relationships with loved ones is an important part of healthy ageing. The World Health Organization identifies social isolation and loneliness as social determinants of health, associated with physical and mental health, quality of life and longevity. This is the context in which Korian Family was developed: an app designed to help families stay connected with relatives living in Korian nursing homes and facilitate communication with the care home. The project also aims to strengthen communication and trust between families and care teams.

Korian Family is now available across 100% of Korian nursing homes in France and is currently being piloted in Spain.

Staying connected, even from a distance

Through the app, relatives can send messages and photos to residents. Several members of the same family can contribute, including when they live hundreds or thousands of kilometres away.

Korian Family also allows relatives to follow everyday life at the care home through activities, events and news shared by care teams. Video calls can also be organised using digital devices available in residents' rooms.

The app therefore provides an additional channel alongside visits and direct interaction, particularly when distance or communication difficulties make regular contact more challenging.

Social connection as a health and longevity issue

In its 2025 report on social connection, WHO highlights that strong social connections are associated with better health and longer lives. It also identifies access to information and communication technologies among the approaches that can help strengthen social connection among older people.

Without replacing human relationships, Korian Family illustrates how digital tools can help maintain family connections, support residents' social lives and facilitate communication between relatives and care professionals.
