Medicalised nursing homes are specialty facilities offering accommodation and care for vulnerable older people. These facilities offer both long-term care and short respite stays, including day care in some cases. Dedicated to the elderly and situations of great dependency, in particular cognitive dependency (Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders), these Group facilities offer permanent stays, short-term stays, and day care services. Rooted in the regions where they are located, the Clariane Group’s care homes work in close collaboration with the local health and social ecosystem.

Alternative living solutions, for their part, meet the aspirations of new generations of senior citizens in terms of care and support. They include living solutions such as the Âges & Vie shared houses in France, assisted living and domiciliary care.

Four structural trends are confirming the growing importance of tailored service offerings for older and vulnerable people. Chronic diseases, population ageing, the digitalisation of healthcare and the desire to age at home are reshaping needs and expectations in terms of care and support.

1. Chronic diseases: Today, chronic diseases — including diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular or respiratory conditions — represent the leading cause of mortality and disability in Europe. Each year, they result in nearly 1.8 million avoidable deaths. In 2023, more than one third of adults in the European Union were living with at least one chronic disease or long-term health problem.
2. Ageing population: The proportion of people aged 65 and over continues to increase, driven by longer life expectancy and persistently low birth rates. In the European Union, this share is expected to rise from 21.6% in 2024 to 24.2% by 2030, reaching 30.6% by 2050.
3. Digitalisation of healthcare: Digital transformation is redefining access to and the quality of care in Europe. Telemedicine, which accounted for nearly 16% of consultations in 2022, enables faster access to healthcare professionals. Electronic health records strengthen continuity and coordination across care pathways. Artificial intelligence is opening new perspectives in personalised prevention, chronic disease monitoring and innovation in patient support.
4. Domiciliary care: The desire to age at home has been a major trend in Europe for more than twenty years. Driven by the baby-boom generation and its aspiration for autonomy, this shift reflects the desire to preserve one’s rhythm of life and familiar surroundings.
