Smartz: connected continence products to better adapt care to individual needs
In Italy, Clariane is using Smartz, a connected solution designed to better adapt continence care to each resident’s needs. A sensor integrated into the continence product and connected to a digital platform allows care teams to monitor moisture levels in real time and intervene when a change is needed. Following trials across four Korian facilities, the solution is currently deployed in three nursing homes in Italy, covering more than 600 beds, with a fourth facility expected to follow.

Adapting care to each resident’s needs
Smartz combines a lightweight, flexible printed sensor, a reusable data-transmission pod and an application allowing professionals to remotely monitor the status of the continence product. The aim is to move from systematically scheduled changes towards interventions based more closely on each person’s actual needs.
This approach can help avoid certain manual checks and unnecessary night-time awakenings, supporting resident comfort and sleep while also making everyday work easier for care teams.
Results for comfort and quality of care
Facilities that tested Smartz reported significant results: 90% less time spent in wet continence products, half as many night-time awakenings and around one-third fewer continence products used.
Earlier trials reported by Clariane Italia also showed fewer pressure injuries and cases of incontinence-associated dermatitis, as well as improved sleep quality. The initiative was also associated with more than 30 tonnes of CO₂ avoided each year, notably through reduced use of continence products.
Beyond continence management, the technology can also monitor movement and temperature, opening up further potential applications related to areas such as skin health, hydration and risk detection.
Smartz illustrates how connected technologies can help individualise care, preserve the comfort and dignity of older people, and support professionals in their everyday work.
