Kaspard: better detecting and understanding falls to help preserve autonomy

Falls are a major healthy ageing issue. In France, 174,824 fall-related hospitalisations and 20,148 fall-related deaths were recorded in 2024 among people aged 65 and over, with risk increasing substantially with age. (Source: Santé publique France)
To help address fall-related risks, Korian is deploying Kaspard, a fall detection and analysis solution designed to support residents’ mobility in a safer environment. The system is now deployed across 85 Korian nursing homes in France and Belgium.

Detecting falls without filming residents

Installed on the ceiling of residents’ rooms, Kaspard uses a 3D distance sensor combined with artificial intelligence algorithms. The technology does not produce images of residents: it recreates the room as a 3D point cloud, allowing movement to be detected while preserving privacy.

When a fall is detected, care professionals receive a real-time alert so that they can respond quickly. The system can also flag an unusually long period out of bed, which may indicate that a resident requires assistance.

Better understanding the circumstances of falls

Beyond alerts, Kaspard provides care teams with a 3D reconstruction of the event and data on residents’ activity. This information can help professionals better understand the circumstances of a fall or changes in mobility patterns and adapt care accordingly.

An evaluation conducted among staff at Korian nursing homes in France and Belgium provides insights into the day-to-day use of the device. Among those who answered the relevant questions, 87% recognise its added value in detecting falls and 82% feel it enables them to respond more quickly when a resident falls or gets out of bed. However, the evaluation also highlights technical difficulties and areas for improvement, including alert reliability, maintenance, training and deployment conditions.

These findings help clarify the value of the device for care teams, as well as the conditions needed to support its continued use alongside professional observation and care.

Key takeaways

Kaspard is a solution designed to support residents’ mobility in a safer environment. Its ceiling-mounted sensor helps care teams:

  • Detect falls and monitor bed exits, with real-time alerts when a fall occurs or a resident stays out of bed for too long.
  • Better understand residents’ activity, using activity data and 3D fall analysis to support personalised care.
